All events were by invitation only except the opening keynote address on Wednesday evening, which is open to the public. The program will begin on Wednesday, May 4 at 5:00pm and conclude on Friday, May 6 at 2:00pm. Details are below. PDF of the Schedule

We were are happy to have hosted the following keynote presenters:

Shirley Tilghman, President of Princeton University, will deliver the opening keynote: "Universities in the Service of the Imagination"

Drawing on Princeton’s own experience, President Tilghman will discuss both the institutional and societal value of bringing the creative and performing arts into the mainstream of university life; of ensuring that the creation of art and the study of art are in conversation with one another.

Don Michael Randel, President of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, will open Thursday morning: "What Researchers and Artists Actually Do"

C. P. Snow did us a great disservice when he declared that there were two cultures. This was largely about British politics in general and Cambridge politics in particular. We need to understand-today especially-that scientists and humanists and artists are fundamentally engaged in the same enterprise. This enterprise is at the heart of what the university is about across all of its research and teaching in all of its disciplines.

Nancy Cantor, Chancellor of Syracuse University, will open Friday morning: "Inciting Insight: Situating the Arts in Higher Education."

Creating,  funding, and rewarding new models that can evolve, surprise, and succeed.

Between keynote presentations, participants were engaged in structured and informal conversations, working groups, and original creative work. We crafted a meeting that we hoped would be exciting, stimulating, and productive of new relationships and vital plans for advancing the role of art-making and the arts in our universities.
